Eight People, One Gift, And Nobody Wants To Collect The Money

A gift that's ₹2,999 for one person and ₹375 for eight. Plus how to actually collect the money without three weeks of reminders.

Eight People, One Gift, And Nobody Wants To Collect The Money

Somebody types "guys let's do something for her birthday" into the group.

Four people react with a thumbs up. One suggests a spa voucher. One says "I'm in for whatever". Two say nothing at all and will later claim they didn't see the message.

Then nothing happens for nine days, and on the tenth day everyone sends a story.

Why group gifts fail

Not because people don't care. Because of three specific failures, in order:

No decision. Everyone has an opinion and nobody has authority, so the options thread runs for a week and dies of exhaustion.

No collection. One person fronts the money and then has to chase seven adults for four hundred rupees, which is socially unpleasant enough that most people just eat the cost and quietly resent it.

No deadline. The birthday is a deadline but nobody works backwards from it, so the decision gets made two days before, which eliminates every option that needs lead time.

The fix is structural, not motivational

One person decides. Not a vote. Whoever cares most picks, announces it, and the group agrees because the alternative is another week of the options thread. If that person is you - and it is, that's why you're reading this - just decide.

Collect after, not before. Put it on your card, then send one message with the amount and a payment link. People pay a specific number instantly and ignore an open-ended request for a week.

Set the date two weeks early. Not because it takes two weeks, but because everything gets done at the deadline and you want the deadline before the actual date.

What to actually get

The gift needs three properties for a group: it can't be split, it should be better because there were more of you, and it shouldn't be something one person could just buy alone.

That rules out most things. It rules in very few.

N° 04 · Memory Film - ₹2,999

Everyone in the group sends photos. Which means the film contains material from eight different phones - angles and evenings and years that no single person has.

That's the property that matters: it's genuinely better because it was a group gift. A pooled-money watch is just a watch somebody could have bought alone. This one couldn't exist without all of you.

The arithmetic

PeopleEach
4₹750
6₹500
8₹375
12₹250
40 (a college batch)₹75

At eight people it's ₹375, which is roughly one round of coffee and below the threshold at which anyone deliberates. Nobody has ever argued about ₹375.

The collecting-photos problem, which is the real one

Money is easy. Photos are where this dies.

What works: one WhatsApp group, one Google Photos shared album, one deadline, and a message that says drop anything, blurry is fine, don't curate.

What doesn't work: asking people to "send their best ones". That requires a decision and people don't make it. Ask for volume, not quality - we do the choosing.

Give it a week. You'll get most of it in the last two hours, as always.

For office farewells too

Same structure, and the maths is even better because there are more of you.

A film for someone leaving after six years, made from photos across the whole office, is a considerably better send-off than a card everyone signed and a gift voucher.

The bit at the end

Group gifts are the only kind where the gift is also evidence that a group exists.

That's worth something on its own, and it's the reason the organising is worth doing even though it's annoying and even though you'll be the one chasing photos on the last day.

Photos storage hain. Stories memories hain.
