You Have 34,000 Photos And You've Looked At About Nine Of Them

Your camera roll is a landfill with a search function. A practical guide to getting something out of it.

You Have 34,000 Photos And You've Looked At About Nine Of Them

Go and check. Settings, storage, photos. The number is worse than you think.

Now scroll to a random point about three years back. You will find, in order: eleven near-identical photos of the same sunset, a screenshot of a bank OTP, a photo of a parking spot number, four blurry shots of a friend mid-sentence, and a picture of a menu.

This is the archive of your life. It's mostly a menu.

How we got here

Your parents took about thirty-six photographs a year. Film cost money, developing cost money, and every frame was a decision. Which is why their photo albums are actually good - brutal editing, enforced by economics.

You take thirty-six photographs at one dinner.

The cost of taking a photo went to zero, and so did the cost of not choosing. Nobody deletes. Nobody sorts. The archive just accretes, and the good photographs - the ten or fifteen genuinely irreplaceable ones - are buried under nine thousand screenshots of things you needed for a day.

The actual problem

It isn't storage. Storage is cheap.

The problem is that an unsorted archive is functionally the same as no archive. You have the photo of your grandfather laughing. You cannot find it. Those are, in practice, the same situation.

You will discover this the day you actually need it, which will be a bad day.

Three things worth doing, in order of effort

1. The five-minute one: favourite as you go

Every time a photo makes you feel something, hit the heart. That's it. No sorting session, no free weekend, no app.

In a year you'll have a folder of two hundred photographs that is more valuable than the other thirty-four thousand combined.

2. The one-hour one: back it up twice

One cloud service and one other place. Not two folders on the same phone.

Every single person who has lost a phone with an unbacked-up camera roll describes it the same way, and it isn't about the phone.

3. The one-afternoon one: kill the screenshots

Search your gallery for "screenshot". Delete the lot. You will not miss a single one and you'll get back an alarming amount of space.

The part that isn't about organisation

Here's the thing none of the above fixes.

A sorted archive is still an archive. You will still not sit down on a Tuesday and scroll through four years of your life, because that isn't a thing people do. Photos don't get watched. They get stored.

The only time a pile of images actually becomes a story is when someone shapes it - chooses forty out of four thousand, puts them in an order, decides what the thing is about. That's an act of editing, and it's the one step that never happens on its own.

That's the entire gap between having documentation of your life and having something you can actually experience.

Which is what we do

N° 04 · Memory Film - ₹2,999. You send the photos - unsorted is expected, we've never received a sorted folder. We choose, order, score and cut them into a short film.

Teaser in 24 hours, film in 2-3 days.

Most people commission one for someone else. A decent number commission one for themselves, and are slightly embarrassed about it, and shouldn't be.

Do the five-minute thing regardless

Even if you never buy anything: start favouriting. It costs nothing, it takes no decisions, and it means that when you do eventually want the good photographs, they're findable.

Photos storage hain. Stories memories hain.
