Nobody Announced That The Friendship Group Ended

Nobody announced it. The group chat just slowed down. On growing apart from people you never fell out with.

Nobody Announced That The Friendship Group Ended

There was no fight.

That's the part that makes it strange. Nobody said anything cruel, nobody chose sides, nothing happened at all. The group chat just went from three hundred messages a day to somebody sharing a reel every few weeks, and then to birthday wishes, and then to the specific silence of eight people who all still have each other's numbers.

How it actually goes

Year one out of college, it holds. Everyone's in different cities but the calls are frequent and there's a plan for a trip in December.

Year two, the trip doesn't happen. Two people can't get leave. One is doing a masters. The plan moves to March and then stops being mentioned.

Year three, you find out someone got engaged from an Instagram post.

Nobody did anything wrong. Everyone got jobs and rent and a commute and a relationship, and the amount of energy a friendship needs turned out to be more than what's left over on a Wednesday.

The uncomfortable bit

You don't drift from everyone equally.

There are two or three people you'd still drop everything for, and there are five who were mostly proximity - you were in the same building for four years and that was doing more work than either of you realised.

That's not a moral failing. Most friendships are situational and that's fine. But it's worth knowing which ones are which, because the situational ones will end quietly on their own and the real ones will also end quietly on their own unless somebody does something, and there is no natural occasion that forces the issue.

Nothing forces the issue

Family has festivals. Couples have anniversaries. Colleagues have farewells.

Friendship has nothing. No date, no ritual, no socially mandated moment where you're required to tell someone they matter. So it just doesn't get said, for years, and then it's been long enough that saying it would be weird.

The gap isn't feeling. It's format.

What people usually do instead

They send a reel. This is genuinely a form of communication and shouldn't be dismissed - sending someone a video you knew only they would find funny is a way of saying I was thinking about you, and everyone involved understands it.

But it has a ceiling. You cannot get past a certain depth in reels, and after a few years of only reels the friendship is being maintained rather than continued.

Making your own occasion

You don't need a festival. You need a reason.

Their birthday works. A promotion works. A random Tuesday works, and is honestly better, because there's no expectation attached to it and it can't be mistaken for obligation.

N° 03 · Custom Song - ₹999

A song about the actual friendship. The specific things - the flat, the fight, the year you were both broke, the running joke that has now been running for a decade.

Sent with no occasion and no explanation. It's the most direct thing you can do that still lets both of you avoid an emotionally direct conversation, which for a lot of friendships is exactly the right amount.

N° 02 · Voice Letter - ₹499

If a song is more production than the moment warrants. You say the thing, we make it into something that lasts.

Teaser in 24 hours, finished in 2-3 days, for both.

Or don't buy anything

Genuinely. The point of this post isn't the products.

Call them. Not a text - a call, unannounced, which everyone in this generation finds mildly alarming and which works precisely because of that. Or book a flight. Or send the message you've been not sending.

The friendships that survive your twenties are the ones somebody kept deciding to maintain. It's almost always the same person doing the deciding, and if you've read this far it's probably you.

Photos storage hain. Stories memories hain.
